Updated Charge Categories Now Available

As part of our ongoing commitment to improving clarity and consistency in adjudication, we’ve introduced enhancements to our charge categorization system. These updates are designed to better reflect the nature and severity of certain offenses, helping your team make more informed decisions.

What’s New?

New and Updated Charge Categories:

  • Theft of a Firearm

    • Previously under: Theft

    • Why the change? Recognizes the increased severity and legal implications of firearm-related thefts, which often pose heightened workplace safety concerns.

  • Possession of a Stolen Firearm

    • Previously under: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm

    • Why the change? Separates this high-risk offense from general stolen property possession due to its common felony classification and public safety impact.

  • Drug Trafficking

    • Previously under: Sell/Distribute/Manufacture Drugs

    • Why the change? Differentiates high-volume or severe drug offenses from lower-level drug charges to better align with legal and risk implications.

  • Severe Assault & Battery

    • Previously under: Assault & Battery

    • Why the change? Captures offenses that involve serious bodily injury or take place in protected settings (e.g., schools, public offices).

  • Failure to Register as Offender

    • New Category

    • Why the change? Introduces a distinct classification for failure to register offenses, excluding sex offender-related cases, including violent or arson offender registration violations.

Impact to Your Workflow

  • If you use Assess Rules, your current configuration will continue to score records as before.

  • If you’re an Assess Premium customer, you can now set up unique rules specific to these new categories to better align with your hiring criteria.
