Smarter Employment Document Collection and Validation
Checkr has always collected and reviewed employment documents as part of the verification process—something many background check providers don't offer. What's new is the level of comprehensiveness, speed, and AI-fraud detection built into the review process, helping employers receive faster, more reliable verification results.
It's important to note that document review remains a last-resort verification method. Checkr will continue to attempt verification first through higher-confidence sources, such as employer outreach and payroll providers.
Note: Updates will be rolling out to all accounts over the next month. DOT employment and international employment are excluded from this update.
What's changing?
New default settings: All customers using US employment verifications will receive new default settings. You can contact our support team if you’d like to change them.
Document collection policy: Start & End (default): Checkr collects two documents per employer. One confirming the start of employment and one confirming the end date.
Apply-flow policy: Optional (default): Candidates are prompted to upload documents during the application flow, but may continue without doing so. If document review becomes necessary later, Checkr will request documents through the exception process, where candidates receive an email requesting additional information.
Customers who currently have document review disabled will keep their existing configuration. Customers can also choose to turn off document review at any time. Note that the completion rate will be lower with doc review turned off.
AI-powered fraud detection: Employment documents used for review are automatically analyzed using AI-powered fraud detection technology to help identify potentially suspicious or manipulated documents. As AI tools make it easier than ever to create convincing fake employment documents, Checkr now performs additional authenticity checks before documents are used to verify employment.
Our fraud detection technology analyzes documents for indicators such as:
Evidence of document manipulation or tampering
Spelling, formatting, and font inconsistencies
Mathematical and date discrepancies
Suspicious seals, signatures, and authenticity markers
Reused templates and inconsistencies across submitted documents
Documents identified as high risk are marked as “consider” so employers can make more informed hiring decisions.
Configuration Options
If the default settings don't meet your needs, contact Checkr Support to update your package settings.
Document Collection Policy
Start & End (default): Collect one document confirming the start of employment and one confirming the end.
One Per Year: Collect one document for each year of employment.
No Documents: Disable document collection and rely on other employment verification methods. Note that this will likely result in a lower completion rate, meaning more verifications will be handled by your team rather than Checkr.
Apply-Flow Policy
Optional (default): Candidates may continue without uploading documents during the application flow.
Mandatory: Candidates must upload the required documents before submitting their background check to help reduce exception-related delays when documents are needed. Note: We recommend communicating this new requirement to customers if you turn on this setting.
Document fraud detection
No action is required to enable document fraud detection. This capability is automatically included for all customers using US employment document review.
