Smarter Employment Document Collection and Validation

Checkr has always collected and reviewed employment documents as part of the verification process—something many background check providers don't offer. What's new is the level of comprehensiveness and speed built into the review process, helping employers receive faster, more reliable verification results.

It's important to note that document review remains a last-resort verification method. Checkr will continue to attempt verification first through higher-confidence sources, such as employer outreach and payroll providers.

Note: Updates will be rolling out to all accounts over the next month. DOT employment and international employment are excluded from this update.

What's changing?

Updated apply flow: Candidates completing an employment verification will see an updated apply flow. Based on your document collection policy, they may be prompted to upload employment documents during the background check. By default, this step is optional and can be skipped. If documents are later needed, Checkr will automatically contact the candidate and request them.

New configuration options: All customers who use US employment verifications can adjust their package settings to align with their document review policies. You can contact our support team if you’d like to change them.

  1. What documents do we collect?

    1. Single (default): Checkr collects 1 document within the date range of employment.

    2. Start & End: Collect one document confirming the start of employment and one confirming the end.

    3. One Per Year: Collect one document for each year of employment.

    4. No Documents: Disable document collection and rely on other employment verification methods. Note that this will likely result in a lower completion rate, meaning more verifications will be handled by your team rather than Checkr.

  2. When are documents collected?

    1. Optional (default): Candidates may continue without uploading documents during the application flow.

    2. Mandatory: Candidates must upload the required documents before submitting their background check to help reduce exception-related delays when documents are needed. Note: We recommend communicating this new requirement to customers if you turn on this setting.

Customers who currently have document review disabled will keep their existing configuration. Customers can also choose to turn off document review at any time. Note that the completion rate will be lower with doc review turned off.
